At a time when the obituary of Donald Trump is being written in Iran, the president of the USA brought back the rhetoric about an increased American presence in Greenland, leaving insinuations about a political approach that causes intense reactions, at a time when the financial burden of the war in Iran already weighs down the cost of living in the USA. This new move comes within an already tense geopolitical environment, where the Arctic is evolving into a field of competition among great powers.
Hello Greenland: The image that caused reactions
Trump posted an image created by artificial intelligence, in which he appears to tower over Greenland, with the caption Hello, Greenland!. The post was interpreted by many as a symbolic display of power and came at a time of increased tension in the region.

Incidents of protests against American presence
A few hours before, the special envoy of the USA for Greenland, Jeff Landry, faced intense reactions upon his arrival in Nuuk, where a new American consulate was inaugurated. More than 500 residents of Greenland protested in the capital, holding banners with slogans such as Go Home USA, Make America Go Away and We are not for sale. The protesters turned their backs on the consulate building in a symbolic act of rejection of the increasing American presence.

Greenland is not for sale
Residents and local representatives made it clear that the region is not an object of negotiation. Grethe Kramer Berthelsen stated to AFP: Greenland belongs to us. It is our country. It belongs neither to Denmark nor to the United States. At the same time, Aqqalukkuluk Fontain emphasized to the BBC that the government has already informed Trump that Greenland is not for sale.
Strategic importance and American persistence
Jeff Landry argued that the USA must significantly strengthen their presence in the region, characterizing Greenland as critical for the national security of the USA. The region is considered strategically pivotal due to its geographical position between Europe and North America, its proximity to missile routes and the estimated reserves of rare earths. At the same time, the melting of the ice in the Arctic opens new shipping routes, increasing the geo-economic and military interest of the great powers.
Historical military presence of the USA
During the Cold War, the USA maintained 17 military installations in Greenland. Today, only the Pituffik Space Base operates, which remains the only active military point of presence. The discussion about a potential strengthening of infrastructure in the region has returned, with the US Northern Command examining upgrades and potential activity in additional locations.

Political tension and diplomatic distances
The inauguration ceremony of the new American consulate in Nuuk took place within an intense climate of distrust. The ambassador of the USA to Denmark, Kenneth Howery, characterized the Arctic as a region of global importance, underlining that the USA will remain allies and partners regardless of the future course of Greenland. According to the public network KNR, Howery also stated that Trump has ruled out the use of military force to control the region, leaving the final decision to the residents themselves.
Doubts and political distance
Despite the assurances, the reactions remain intense. The new diplomatic complex of 3,000 square meters has already acquired the nickname Trump Towers, reflecting the distrust of a portion of the local society. Many politicians of Greenland abstained from the inauguration, with the Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen not attending the ceremony.
No red line except for the flag
The tension peaked when Jeff Landry, in his interview, left open the possibility of independence of Greenland from Denmark, arguing that this could constitute an opportunity for growth. However, his phrase that our only red line is the red, white and blue was interpreted as a direct reference to the American flag and caused further reactions.
Arctic on a track of geopolitical conflict
The overall setting highlights an Arctic that is gradually turning into a field of competition for influence, with Greenland at the center of the strategic designs of the USA and the local society reacting strongly against any prospect of increased external control.
